Tip:

This year, several significant religious and cultural events fall on the same day. March 21 is the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racism. In the Christian tradition, this year it is also Good Friday where Christians commemorate Christ’s passion and death on the cross to pay for the world’s sins. Also this year, it is the Jewish holiday of Purim which celebrates victory over an oppressive ruler as related in the Book of Ester. Hindus will celebrate Holi on March 21 this year, which is a festival dedicated to Krishna. Baha’is and Zoroastrians will celebrate New Years Day on March 21 (Naw Ruz and Now Ruz). Finally, to cap off the significant events occuring on this day, there will also be a full moon.

Abstract: Evangelical Fellowship of Canada wants equal treatment

In an editorial carried on her news weblog at Christianity.ca, Janet Epp Buckingham, legal counsel for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, writes about the latest controversy surrounding the way the CRTC revoked the licence of shock jock radio station CHOI in Quebec City.

After receiving 92 complaints about abusive language, the regulatory body used its authority to shut the radio station down, provoking a huge "freedom of speech" protest of 50,000 in Quebec City July 23.

Epp Buckingham claims the CRTC's actions demonstrate clear evidence of a double standard.

"Well, isn't it dandy to see the media and free speech advocates stand up for free expression now. Where have they been as the CRTC has banned single faith radio stations for 80 years? And where do they stand on the current requirements on single faith stations to broadcast certain hours per week of other faiths?"

Her weblog can be found here.
