This year, several significant religious and cultural events fall on the same day. March 21 is the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racism. In the Christian tradition, this year it is also Good Friday where Christians commemorate Christ’s passion and death on the cross to pay for the world’s sins. Also this year, it is the Jewish holiday of Purim which celebrates victory over an oppressive ruler as related in the Book of Ester. Hindus will celebrate Holi on March 21 this year, which is a festival dedicated to Krishna. Baha’is and Zoroastrians will celebrate New Years Day on March 21 (Naw Ruz and Now Ruz). Finally, to cap off the significant events occuring on this day, there will also be a full moon.

Abstract: Chief of Police declares suspect guilty

With the announcement of a suspect in the Cecilia Zhang murder investigation, there are a variety of moral and faith issues waiting to be explored.

Peel Police Chief Noel Catney declared before a news conference that the suspect, 21 year old Min Chen, was "not just a murderer, this is the most despicable of criminals, this is a child murderer," Catney said at the press conference.

The chief of police is coming under significant criticism for tainting the suspect's right to an unprejudiced trial. And yet, in an interview with CBC Radio, Catney referred to significant information he had - and left unsaid the frustrations he and his investigators have been under over the past 10 months since the little girl's disappearance.

Once-atheist parents find relief in religion

In an interesting article in the Globe and Mail, Jan Wong writes about the way Cecilia's parents - who were raised in Communist China - turned away from atheism as the crisis broke over their lives. It is an interesting read.
