Abstract: BC's Attorney General Promises Investigation of Bountiful

BC's Attorney General, acting on media reports and complaints, has announced an investigation into a Mormon break-away sect based in Bountiful, BC.

Known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it was established in British Columbia by Mormons who were looking for a way to continue their practice of polygamy after the Mormon Church formally abandoned the practice in 1890.

Polygamy is illegal in Canada but officials have been reluctant to prosecute for fear of being in conflict with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees freedom of religion.
