Abstract: Many religious groups and churches express considerable distress at the government's proposed same-sex marriage law, but others greet it warmly. The United Church of Canada was foremost among the supporters of the bill, while most other churches panned it, saying it does too little to protect the right of congregations to refuse to solemnize civil marriage as set out in the law.
