Tip:

At long last, the report from Gerard Bouchard and Charles Taylor on reasonable accommodation in Quebec has been released, and provides a wealth of story ideas for reporters covering religion in Canada.  For an abridged pdf of the full report, check out this webpage for "Building the Future: A Time for Reconciliation".   Bear in mind that the Commission was launched out of concerns in Quebec over Muslim headscarves, Sikh kirpans, and the possibility of sharia law coming to Canada….so the implications of accommodating religious practices, values, traditions and rights are analyzed within the framework of Canadian society and national values.  Here is the website:

There are 5,000 Muslims in Manitoba, with about 4,500 living in Winnipeg. There are two mosques in Manitoba; the one in Winnipeg, called the Manitoba Islamic Centre, was built in 1975 and is managed by Manitoba Islamic Association, a voluntary non profit organization. Paid membership varies from year to year, but the services of the Centre are available to all Muslims. The second mosque is in Brandon; called the Islamic Centre of Brandon, it was built in 2001.

The Manitoba Muslim community is largely from Pakistan and India, with the second largest group from Middle East and the Caribbean/West Indies. There is also a large number of Muslims from Bosnia, as well as Kurds, Afghanis, Somalis, Sudanese and others. In all, almost 40 nationalities and 30 different languages and dialects are represented within the community. The majority of Muslims in Manitoba are from the Sunni branch of Islam.

The language of Prayer for Muslims is Arabic and the language of communication is English.

The Manitoba Islamic Centre was founded in response to the social, cultural and religious needs of Muslims in Manitoba; it was incorporated 1964. The Centre is funded mainly by private donations. .

The first full time Islamic private school in Manitoba is the ALhijra Islamic School, opened in 1996. Today it has 110 students from kindergarten to grade seven. ALhijra is member of the Independent school federation and is recognized by the Manitoba Board of Education.

Winnipeg is also the headquarters of the Islamic Social Services Association of United States and Canada. The Manitoba Islamic Centre is affiliated with all Major Islamic organizations in North America, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations Canada (CAIR-CAN).
